Joseph L. Fecio, CPA, CFP®
I grew up in South Buffalo with five siblings in a working-class family. Our brother, Jim, was lost to leukemia at age 19. My father worked hard to support our family and my mother stayed at home until we were old enough and then worked as a substitute teacher and a clerk for the City of Buffalo. Unfortunately, my parents are no longer with us but the love they shared and the values that they instilled in me have served as a foundation of my personal and professional life. I am fortunate that my siblings live in the Buffalo area so we are able to get together on a regular basis.
I live in East Amherst with my lovely wife, Diane, and four rescue cats (Emily, Tabitha, Leah and Mandi). My marriage to Diane came with the added benefit of two wonderful step children: Scott who now lives in Columbus, Ohio and Dawn who now lives in Toronto, Ontario. Over time our family was blessed with the addition of five grandchildren. Sydney, Ethan and Alivia live in Columbus, and Teddy and Lydia live in Toronto. While they do not live in the Buffalo area, we are fortunate that they are a relatively short drive away.
After a fairly short ‘career’ as an engineer, I attended the School of Management at the State University of New York at Buffalo and graduated with honors with an MBA in finance and a concentration in accounting in 1984.
Upon graduation, I joined the Buffalo office of Price Waterhouse where I was a senior tax accountant and earned my CPA designation in 1986. My duties included reviewing corporate and individual tax returns for a diversified client base. I was also part of the Executive Financial Services group which provided financial planning services to corporate executives. During that time, I developed a comprehensive personal financial planning model used by other Price Waterhouse offices nationwide. While at Price Waterhouse, my penchant for financial analysis and skill at developing financial models became obvious.
From Price Waterhouse, I accepted a position at M&T Bank where I could utilize my analysis and modeling skills. I became a vice president of finance and managed a staff of financial analysts to provide support to senior management. During that time, I was instrumental in developing the bank’s current management reporting systems and provided sophisticated analyses that facilitated financial decisions and supported strategic planning and budgeting.
Eventually, the lure of financial planning and desire to help people on a personal basis led me to earn my securities license and my CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM certification in 1999. At that time, I became a financial planner with the M&T Investment Group.
After a short period of time, I decided to start my own financial planning practice and affiliated with Sagemark Consulting in 2000 which evolved to Custom Wealth Strategies in 2015.
My background includes specializing and supporting our clients in the areas of estate planning, business succession planning, retirement and benefits analysis, tax reduction strategies, and investment considerations for executives, business owners, and professionals
In addition to financial planning, I have a passion for working with animals. Although our family didn’t have pets when I was growing up, I reluctantly agreed to adopt our first cat years ago when a friend of my step daughter had to rehome her cat. Miss O’Malley quickly won my heart and ultimately led to the four wonderful cats that currently share our lives. Experiencing the richness that animals add to our lives led me to become an avid volunteer at the Niagara SPCA. I earned a certificate in feline behavior and I started and continue to oversee the cat enrichment program at the shelter. We work with cats struggling in the shelter environment to socialize them and facilitate their adoption. As a result of my demonstrated gift for working with these animals, I have come to be affectionately known as the ‘cat whisperer’.
Client Services Manager & Marketing Coordinator
I was born and raised in Orchard Park, NY (Go Bills!). And in my early 20’s when I started having children, I moved into the Village of Hamburg, a mere 5 minutes down the road, where I still currently reside and enjoy raising my family very much.
I started working for Custom Wealth Strategies (formerly Beck Financial Group) during the summer of 2014 and was brand new to the business. I was a newly single mom to my two daughters and son, Riley, (7) Cameron, (8) and Eric, (9) and what started out as a part time administrative assistant role, turned into a full-time career with a team I’m now proud to call my extended family. At the time, I owned a personal training business and was able to schedule my work around my busy life. But, I no longer felt the security of a second income to fall back on if my business was slow, and no longer had the time to devote to owning a business and giving my clients the attention, they deserved. Finding my way to “Beck Financial Group” literally changed my entire life.
Aside from being a mom and a full-time business owner and trainer, most of my career has been centered around customer service. I was an assistant manager at a spa, an online account manager at a local bank, a branch manager at a staffing agency. With each of these roles, I started out as a receptionist, or a part time employee, eventually landing an assistant or management role in a short time frame. I slowly started to realize how vital customer service is in every organization, and how much I enjoyed making people’s lives easier, and that through hard work, and my friendly and welcoming demeanor that I would be led to a path I would be happy to call a career. I have always been the kind of friend, co-worker or person, that people said, “I feel like we’ve already met” or “you are so easy to talk to” and I truly feel that my personable attitude, and attentiveness to detail is why I have reached the kind of success I have. Every job search had one thing in common: customer service. What I thought meant I lacked actual skills, was the exact opposite. Customer service, and all it encompasses, IS my skill. As the Client Services Manager of our practice I am the first face you see when you walk in, the last face you see when you leave, and I am the voice you can count on hearing every time you call, setting the tone that YOU are our most valued asset.
Now, enough about my work life, you’ll see me there enough!
When I am home, my life revolves around spending time with my three wild and beautiful children, my fiancé Randy and soon to be step-son Taylor and going to as many Buffalo sports games and country music concerts as possible. Eric, my 9-year-old and only son, is the baby who made me a mom. When people told me there is no bond like a little boy and his mom, I had no clue what I was in for! This little man was going to be my new best friend. Shortly after Eric was born, a nurse found a tiny hole on each side of his neck. And after some tests over the next day and a half, I was told my son had a condition called BOR (Branchio-Oto-Renal) Syndrome, which is a dominant genetic disorder effecting the kidneys, ears and neck, but he didn’t inherit it from his father or myself. Through genetic testing, we learned he is one of the very rare cases in which 10% of children with the disorder have developed it out of nowhere, a simple gene mutation, and the only child to have ever been born with it in the Buffalo area. But, my little boy is a fighter, and at 9 years old the only issue we have faced so far has been chronic ear infections, so we keep our fingers crossed! He is full of life, calls himself a “math god”, and he keeps everyone around him laughing. Cameron, my 8-year-old daughter is the epitome of “the perfect child”. She is smart, loving, compassionate, helpful, respectful, and although gave me a run for the money as a baby, turned out so wonderful! Although, she does have quite a stubborn streak which I can confidently say was passed down from me. She is also the only child of my three who has any athletic ability. She is on her second year of travel soccer for the Hamburg Monarchs, and loves every minute of it. Riley, my youngest and 7-year-old, is the most independent of my children. She is confident and quirky, and marches to the beat of her own drum. She’s fiercely loyal to what she believes in and is a lover of ALL animals, especially cats, but picking up a worm, or miraculously catching a bird out of thin air, or touching an ant is not beneath her (even if it grosses out her mother).
When my children are at their dad’s house, my fiancé Randy and I try to attend every Buffalo sports game we can and spend a lot of time on the road watching his 12-year-old son play travel hockey and baseball. He is a Buffalo Bills season ticket holder of 12 years, and I try to attend every game that does not conflict with my kids. But, when the Sabres play, you can find us at every Monday and Tuesday night game. In fact, in March of 2018, we planned a trip to Nashville, TN centered around the Sabres playing the Predators that weekend and as much country music as possible. Turns out, that was his cover, because he proposed to me in Nashville 2 nights before the game, and it turned into an engagement celebration with a massive Sabres win!
Now that you know the most of what there is to know about me, I can’t wait to meet you and give you the attention you deserve!
Wealth Planning Associate
About me… I was born in Buffalo, NY and have lived on Grand Island, NY for a majority of my life. I grew up playing several sports, but hockey was always my go to. I’ve been a Sabres fan (for better or for worse) before I could skate myself. Growing up I was fortunate enough to play on a national level and win multiple state championships. The comradery that resulted from those years will last a lifetime. I still play recreationally today with many of the same guys. I realize that none of it would’ve been possible without the unconditional support from my family.
After high school I attended University at Buffalo, thus beginning my financial education. Throughout college I worked full time landscaping and snowplowing. In 2017, I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a concentration in financial analysis. Upon graduation, I accepted an offer from an international financial planning firm in a branch in Williamsville, NY. After passing the Series 7 and 66 examinations, I began building my financial planning practice. I absorbed so much in such a short amount of time and loved every minute of it. Having the ability to have a direct impact and help everyone from my own family to total strangers gives me all the inspiration I could ever need.
I was introduced to Dave Burgio during this time and that was when I learned about a more holistic style of planning. I was offered a position by Dave that allowed me to take a step back from running my own practice and put me in a position to learn the advanced level of planning necessary to have the deepest impact on client’s financial lives.
The support I get from my family, my beautiful girlfriend Erica, our pups Spot and Sunny, and Dave and his team is insurmountable. I have the utmost respect for this firm and look forward to being part of the impact we have on our clients and the community as a whole.
